Connect the Noses

I was very moved to be in a place with so many people (400!) with similar goals, values and passions. It felt like it does whenever two or more clowns gather, like family. It felt normal and special at the same time because we’ve been cut off from such gatherings for 2 years. That being said, the intensity of the time together was such that I don’t know that I’d want it more than every two years!

There was so much! Artistic workshops, expert panels, presentations on new projects, new developments and research. It really felt like a trade show where each presentation was a snapshot of more in-depth work and discussion that could follow-on from there. My focus this year was largely on new developments and research, for seniors and within organisations.

I enjoyed the sessions I attended that had clowning with seniors as a focus. The idea of “flourishing” spiritually, emotionally, physically despite dementia or institutionalisation, and how the clown contributes to this idea. I also enjoyed hearing about organisational tips on change and helping artists be more resilient, disseminating our knowledge and expertise and a renewed look at fundraising.

I am curious to see NAFHCO develop further in the area of a collaboration with Clowns Without Borders and the WHO for the ability to better be able to respond to crisis situations both locally and internationally. Also, curious to see the NAFHCO and EFHCO collaboration flourish around research, conferences, exchanges, and to continue to lend credibility to the profession and raise its profile worldwide. Also, wondering if it's time for NAFHCO to reach out to Cuba, Mexico…and even central and South American organisations, to start to really connect the noses.
